Commercial Hot Water Urns for Tea and Coffee Service

A commercial hot water urn is a practical way to keep a larger volume of hot water ready for tea, coffee and self-service beverage stations. They are commonly used in cafés, offices, hotels, churches, community halls, canteens and catering events. The main things to compare are capacity, insulation, temperature control, power requirements and ease of cleaning.

What Size Water Urn Do You Need?

A 10 litre urn is a good choice for smaller offices, meeting rooms and low-volume service. It has a compact footprint and is easier to move and refill.

A 16L or 20L water urn suits medium-sized workplaces, cafés, breakfast areas and community events. A 20 litre urn can provide around 80 x 250ml servings in theory, although the actual number will depend on cup size and usable capacity.

A 30L or 40L commercial water urn is better suited to busy functions, canteens, hotels and high-volume catering. Larger models reduce the need for frequent refilling, but they take longer to heat and require more bench space.

Choose a capacity that matches your busiest service period rather than simply buying the largest option available.

Features Worth Comparing

Double-wall insulation helps reduce heat loss and can lower the amount of energy needed to maintain the selected temperature. This is useful when the urn stays switched on for several hours.

Adjustable temperature control allows you to select a suitable setting for tea, coffee and other hot drinks. Many electric urns also include an automatic keep-warm function.

A visible water level gauge makes it easier to see when the urn needs refilling, while boil-dry or thermal cut-out protection helps protect the heating system if the water level becomes too low.

Models with a concealed heating element are generally easier to clean and descale because the inside of the tank has fewer exposed components.

You should also check the height below the dispensing tap, especially when filling taller mugs, teapots or insulated jugs.

Is a Water Urn Better Than a Kettle?

A kettle is usually suitable when only a few drinks are prepared occasionally. A hot water urn becomes more practical when many people need drinks within a short period or when hot water needs to remain available throughout a meeting, buffet or event.

The advantage of an urn is convenience. Staff do not need to keep refilling and boiling several kettles during service.

To avoid unnecessary electricity use, select the correct capacity, keep the lid closed, descale the unit regularly and switch it off when it is no longer required.
